Short answer: the Changan Deepal S05 REEV is a rear-wheel-drive electric SUV with a petrol range extender. A 27.28 kWh battery gives up to 170 km of pure electric driving (NEDC), and a 1.5-litre Blue Whale engine works only as a generator, taking the combined range past 1,000 km. The rear motor makes 160 kW (215 hp) and 320 N·m. Deepal Pakistan lists the S05 REEV Max at PKR 9,999,000, including freight and CVT, as a limited-time special offer.
All figures below come from Changan Pakistan's official Deepal S05 page and the Deepal S05 brochure, checked on 31 October 2026. The diagrams and sketches were made by QuettaWheels to explain the technology.

What is REEV technology?
REEV stands for range-extended electric vehicle. In the Deepal S05 it works like this:
- Only the electric motor drives the wheels. The S05 has one motor, at the rear axle, so it is rear-wheel drive.
- The 1.5-litre petrol engine is not connected to the wheels. It turns a generator that makes electricity for the battery and the motor. Changan quotes a 16:1 compression ratio for this engine; a high compression ratio like this is usually chosen for fuel efficiency.
- You can plug it in. With a full battery you can drive up to 170 km (NEDC) without using any petrol, which covers most daily trips in Quetta.
- When the battery runs low, you simply refuel. The engine starts, generates power, and the car keeps driving like an EV. This is where the 1,000+ km combined range comes from.

Where the REEV parts sit in the Deepal S05
The X-ray sketch below is traced from the real car. It shows roughly where each major part of the REEV system sits. Changan has not published an official cutaway, so the positions are approximate.

The Deepal S05 energy modes
Changan's brochure lists several energy-management modes. Here is what each one does:
- Electric priority (city): the battery powers the rear motor and the engine stays off. "Mandatory pure electric" keeps the engine off completely.
- Hybrid (highway and high-speed driving): the engine runs the generator when the car needs more energy than the battery alone should supply.
- Fuel priority (mountain and complex roads): the engine works harder to keep the battery charged, so full power is available on long climbs.
- Charging, regeneration and V2L: plug in at home (AC 6.6 kW) or at a fast charger (DC 54.5 kW). Braking sends energy back to the battery, and "parking charging" lets the engine recharge the battery while the car stands still. V2L supplies up to 6.6 kW to outside equipment.

REEV vs hybrid vs plug-in hybrid vs EV

A hybrid or plug-in hybrid can usually send engine power straight to the wheels; a REEV never does. So the Deepal S05 drives like an EV all the time, but you can still refuel at any petrol pump when no charger is nearby.

Is the Deepal S05 right for Quetta and Balochistan?
Why it may suit you
- Up to 170 km of electric range covers most daily city driving, so you can use little or no petrol if you charge at home.
- For trips to Karachi, Islamabad or across Balochistan, the range extender means you can refuel at any petrol pump instead of searching for chargers.
- Fuel priority mode is designed for mountain driving, which suits the hilly routes around Quetta.
- V2L (6.6 kW) can power appliances during load-shedding or outdoor trips.
What to check before buying
- At 169 mm, ground clearance is lower than many SUVs, so take care on rough roads and unpaved tracks.
- It is rear-wheel drive, not 4x4.
- Changan has not published an official fuel consumption figure for range-extender mode on its Pakistan pages. Real economy depends on how often you charge, your speed and the terrain.
- Ask about home charger installation, service support in Quetta and the battery warranty terms.
